This week we have ScottEG! Read what he has to say below:

What were you doing for work before you started eCommerce?

I’ve been in online retail since 2008 with other companies that I’d worked for. I started graphic design in back in 2002 then through the years moved up to Art Director and then transitioned into the Marketing side. I was a Director of Marketing for the last 8 years. Since November 2017 I’ve been Self Employed with my main sources of income coming from Print on Demand.

How did you get your start in eCommerce / Amazon / etc?

From side work / freelance and also previous employment working with different companies through the years. I got serious about it in Jan of 2016 with Private Label and FBA. Formed an LLC and had a solid little biz going. I started Merch by Amazon in April of 2016. It all started as a side hustle.

What were some of your struggles at first?

Trying to make the time, keeping focused, and staying on track with my goals. With a family, full time job and running a side business this wasn’t easy. Also the learning curves. Knowing the ins and outs of Amazon, whether FBA or Merch. Getting to know the different niches to cater to their needs and make sure your putting the right product in front of the right people and at the right time. Also a side note, none of this is passive. I wake up every morning at 5am, 7 days a week, to work. I’ve been doing that for a few years now. It takes a lot of consistent work and willingness to learn.

When was the moment when you “made it” or realized that you were on to something? How did you feel?

Since I’d worked online with the previous companies I knew Amazon was powerful so I never really had a “made it” type of moment. When I first started Merch early 2016 I didn’t fully know about TM and how Amazon handled them. When Prince (The Musician) passed away in April of 2016 I was like oh he has a cool logo I’ll throw that on a shirt and put his dates on it. It was actually approved through Merch and started selling pretty well right away. That was kind of an eye opener moment. It got taken down not long after and I definitely learned my lesson there.

How much time and work would you say you put in to your store?

As a side hustle it would range from 10-20 hrs a week. Now I’m full time with Print on Demand. I’ve kinda moved away from private label and FBA. I am learning more about drop shopping and online arbitrage but haven’t done anything with those.

What would you say to anyone who is interested or considering entering the eCommerce market? Where would you begin?

Everything you need is on YouTube, Facebook Groups or Forums…for FREE.

Courses can be good. They put everything in one packet for you and usually shorten the learning curve. But all the info is out there for free you just have to look for it.

This can be a solid side hustle and I would suggest starting that way. Learn and decide what avenue of selling you prefer. Some people love FBA or dropshipping. I enjoy designing so I took to Print on Demand with Merch and have really taken to it. Learn about them, see what you like best, then stick to it and master it. Also don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Another little tip. Subscribe to the guys / girls that are just starting out on YouTube within your chosen platform. Their videos are usually raw, real, no hype and they’ll share just about everything that they’re doing.

That’s it! Thanks so much Scott! To learn more about Scott you can visit his Facebook, Instagram or YouTube!
